“ID, please?”

I placed my driver’s license in the tray at the bottom of the bulletproof glass window, where the guard retrieved it and held it up, scrutinizing the details.

“For the record,” he said, “you are Miss Katie Harding of San Diego, California, age nineteen?”

“Yes.”

“Have you completed the visitors form?”

I held up the white two-sided form. “Yes.”

“Pass it under.”

I did as he asked, and after he studied it for a moment, he said, “I see you’ve visited here before, Miss Harding. Do you need me to go over the rules?”

“No, I got them.” This was my sixth visit in the past six months, but I still got nervous coming here.

“Then give me a few minutes to print your pass. This pass will allow you to both enter and exit the prison. An officer will hold it for you while you’re visiting the prisoner, but other than that you must have it on you at all times. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

“Have a seat on the bench.”

“Thank you.”

Five minutes later I had my pass, and a guard led me down the hall to one of the search rooms. Inside was a female prison guard who looked to be around six feet tall and two-hundred pounds.

After the door closed, she said, “Any hidden jewelry or such? Studs or piercings?”

“No.”

“Any prosthetics, artificial joints, or pacemaker?”

“No.”

“Any metal in your clothing, such as an underwire bra?”

“No.”

“Are you aware that taking any unauthorized items into a federal prison is a felony? That includes but is not limited to drugs and weapons?”

“Yes.”

“And do you submit willingly to being searched?”

“Yes.”

“According to law, I must inform you that any of your activities while inside the prison may be video recorded. Do you agree to this?”

“Yes.”

She picked up a search wand from a table, and turned it on. As she slowly passed it over the front of my body, and then the back, I listened for the familiar beep that denoted the presence of metal. I’d heard it the first time I came here, when I’d forgotten to remove my clit ring. The embarrassment that had caused ensured I never forgot it again.

After the wand she patted me down, searching for any obvious lumps beneath my knee-length pleated skirt. Finally she went to the door and opened it.

“This officer will take you to the visiting room.”

“Thank you.”

Five minutes later I was sitting in the visiting room waiting for them to bring my brother in. Several small desks along with plastic chairs were scattered around the room, and a few of them were occupied by other visitors and the prisoners they’d come to see, all of them talking quietly.

At the front of the room a guard watched from an elevated glass-walled booth, while a few of his fellow officers walked quietly around the room, sometimes pausing to listen in on the conversations going on.

My brother didn’t belong here. He was a good guy who happened to get involved with the wrong people. He’d gone to school to be an accountant, and had gotten a job soon after graduating.
